SECTION 232 STEEL AND ALUMINUM TARIFFS

What Is The Section 232 Steel and Aluminum Tariffs?

In March 2018, President Trump signed a proclamation that authorized a 25% tariff on steel and 10% tariff on aluminum imported into the U.S. Some U.S. trading partners, including Canada and Mexico, have been exempted from the steel and aluminum tariffs – but most have not.

How Does It Impact Magna?

Magna applauds the recent elimination of the U.S.’s steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Mexico and Canada and Mexico’s retaliatory tariffs. The U.S. should now remove its tariff on all steel and aluminum imports.

The steel and aluminum tariffs have already caused significant disruption across the industry. Rather than protect the economic security of the U.S., tariffs undermine the automotive industry, endanger long-standing international relationships, and negatively affect the entire American economy.

We believe that these tariffs will have an adverse impact on automakers, suppliers and consumers.
