What Is The Section 232 Investigation Regarding Imports Of Automobiles And Automotive Parts?
On May 23, 2018, the U.S. Department of Commerce initiated an investigation into the national security effects of imports of automobiles, including cars, SUVs, vans and light trucks, and automotive parts. On May 17, 2019 President Trump issued a Presidential Proclamation, which stated that current imports of automobiles and certain automotive parts threaten to impair the national security of the United States. Under Section 232, the President can – and did – delay his decision to impose tariffs or quotas for up to 180 days. A decision is expected in November 2019 and the consensus in industry is the Trump Administration will impose some level of tariff.
